Selecting a training provider
HOW TO SELECT A
FIRST AID TRAINING PROVIDER
What are the legal requirements when selecting a
first aid training provider?
HSE gives clear guidance as to how to select a first aid training provider. We are giving you a clear overview below.
You can also click here to read HSE's document, 'Selecting a first-aid training provider - a guide for employers' if you would like to read the full version yourself; you can also download it to use for reference at a later date.
This will give you an idea of what first aid provision you need, and how to choose a competent training provider.

What are your options?
Your options are to either choose external training providers, or run in-house training. If you choose to go with in-house training, you have to abide by a lot of clauses to make sure you comply with the law and the training is fit for purpose.
External training providers could be either voluntary aid societies (St John Ambulance, British Red Cross and, in Scotland, St Andrew's First Aid) or a training provider who offers regulated qualifications that are recognised by a regulated 'awarding organisation'. These Awarding Organisations are regulated by qualification regulators (Ofqual, SQA or, in Wales, the Welsh Government). This means there are rigorous quality assurance systems in place to ensure quality of teaching and compliance with the law. The voluntary aid societies do not always seem to have these processes in place.
due diligence
Whichever option you choose, 'to comply with your legal duties under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 that choice must be appropriate and adequate, based on a needs assessment and appropriate due diligence (reasonable investigation) being conducted. The amount of effort you need to put into due diligence will vary for each option.'
where do we fit in?
All of the the courses we offer (not just the first aid ones) are Ofqual regulated qualifications accredited by Qualsafe Awards and First Aid Awards Ltd via Nuco Training. Even our new CCNSG Safety Passport is accredited via ECITB! This means that you can rest assured that your training is of high quality, is appropriate and adequate and all due diligence has already been performed by our Awarding Organisations - it's an easy way to be compliant with the Health and Safety (First Aid at Work) Regulations 1981.

not just first aid either
Not only do we run a long list of Ofqual regulated qualifications in First Aid, we also run Ofqual regulated qualifications in Mental Health First Aid, citizenAID, Food Safety, Fire Safety, Health and Safety, Manual Handling, Social Care and even the Education and Training courses. So once again, you are assured of quality assured training which helps towards your compliance with First Aid, Food Safety, Health and Safety regulations and many more.
