NOW Foods Vitamin A 25,000 IU

Power Body Nutrition Ltd. is recalling NOW Foods Vitamin A 25,000 IU from Fish Liver Oil because the levels of Vitamin A in the product exceed the maximum recommended intake, which can lead to illness and damage to the liver and kidneys (see below).

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is an important vitamin for our bodies. For instance, tt helps our body's immune system fight off illness and infection; it also aids our night vision, keeps our skin healthy and helps an unborn baby grow.

There are many good, natural sources of vitamin A. Cod liver oil, sweet potatoes, spinach, cheddar, egg, apricots and tomatoes being but a few. For a longer list, have a look at Wikipedia's information on Vitamin A here.

As with most vitamins and minerals, our bodies need a certain amount to function well. Too little, and we suffer the side effects. But too much of it can also cause side effects. In the case of Vitamin A, too much of it allows for toxic levels to accumulate, and cause liver and kidney damage, apart from leading to nausea, irritability, anorexia (reduced appetite), vomiting, blurry vision, headaches, hair loss, muscle and abdominal pain and weakness, drowsiness, and altered mental status. In chronic cases there can also be hair loss, dry skin, drying of the mucous membranes, fever, insomnia, fatigue, weight loss, bone fractures, anemia, and diarrhea.

So you can see, too high doses of Vitamin A are not good for you...
