Food Safety Recall: Frozen Indian Mackerel

Indian Mackerel

Frozen Indian Mackerel by Diamond Food Sales Ltd

Diamond Food Sales Ltd, who are based near London, has had to recall their frozen Indian Mackerels due to the presence of histamine.

Histamine is a natural chemical that is essential to our body's functions - but too much of it can do harm.

Histamine Excess

An excess of histamine leads to the signs of an allergic reaction. This boosts the blood flow to the cells, causing inflammation and swelling. Capillaries can start to leak, leading to red, blotchy spots and more swelling. Internally, more mucus is produced, leading to a runny or stuffy nose, but worse, to the air passages in the lungs (bronchi and bronchioles) to become narrower. This can all lead to problems breathing and to a systematic drop in the person's blood pressure, and can lead to death.

We could not find any information about the recall on Diamond Food Sales Ltd's own website, though did notice that instead of calling the fish 'mackerel', they call it 'mackeral'.
