Food Safety Recall: Aycan Risotto and Brown Rice
Aycan Risotto and Brown Rice
Aytac Foods are recalling their Aycan Risotto Rice and Aycan Brown Rice due to insect infestation (weevils), making these products unsafe to eat.
Rice Weevils
The rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae) is a stored product pest which attacks crops such as wheat, rice, and maize.
Adult rice weevils can fly, and can live for two years. Females lay 2-6 eggs per day and up to 300 over their lifetime. The female chews a hole into a grain kernel, after which she lays a single egg within the hole, before sealing it. The larva develops within the grain, hollowing it out while feeding. It then pupates within the grain kernel and emerges 2–4 days.
So this Aycan Rice, both the risotto and brown rice, contain these weevils and their offspring.
