Waitrose Cookies recalled

Waitrose is recalling their 8 packs of Belgian White Chocolate Chunk All Butter Cookies because some boxes may contain Hazelnut & Milk Chocolate Cookies. The hazelnuts are not declared on the ingredients list, which could cause a serious health issue for those with a severe allergy to nuts and/or hazelnuts.

Tree nut allergies

Tree nut allergies are one of the most common food allergies, together with peanuts and shellfish. For information regarding the difference between peanuts and tree nuts, go here.

Tree nut allergies (and other severe allergies) can lead to a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is life-threatening, and if not treated immediately with adrenaline (epinephrine), the person can die. Their lips will swell up, their throat will close, they might get red splotches all over, their blood pressure will drop.

See the slide images below as to how to treat anaphylaxis.

First Aid Treatment for Anaphylaxis

  • Make sure to remove the trigger (in this case, have them spit out the cookie, remove it from their hand and clean their hand and mouth)
  • Call 999 or 112 (in the UK) or your own country's emergency number
  • Encourage and support them with their medication (in the UK, this will be their adrenaline auto-injector - EpiPen, Jext or Emerade)
  • While still conscious, lay them down with their feet raised
  • Monitor them very closely
    • If they go unconscious but are still breathing normally, put them in the recovery position
    • If they stop breathing, give CPR and get an AED
  • If they have not recovered after 5 minutes, give their second dose of adrenaline
  • Even if they seem to recover, always send them to hospital by ambulance
