Allergen Recall: Costcutter's Independent Sliced Chorizo

Intro

Independent Sliced Chorizo

Costcutter is recalling their Independent Sliced Chorizo because it contains milk. This ingredient is mentioned on the label, but it is not clearly highlighted, thus causing a possible health risk to those with an allergy or intolerance to milk.

Food Allergens

From 13 December 2014, all food businesses need to provide information about allergenic ingredients used in foods sold or provided by them. There are 14 major allergens which need to be declared. These are:

  • Cereals containing gluten (the presence of wheat (such as spelt and Khorasan), rye, barley, oats and their hybridized strains need to be declared)
  • Crustaceans
  • Eggs, including hen, duck, goose, ostrich etc.
  • Fish
  • Peanuts
  • Soybeans and soya derivatives
  • Milk, including cows, goats, sheep etc.
  • Nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pecan nuts, Brazil nuts, pistachio nuts and macadamia nuts (also known as Queensland nut))
  • Celery (including celery leaves, seeds and celeriac)
  • Mustard
  • Sesame
  • Sulphur dioxide or sulphites (where this has been added to a food product and is above 10mg/kg in the finished product. Often found in dried fruit and wine)
  • Lupin
  • Molluscs

Allergen Labeling

According to the EU Food Information for Consumers Regulation No. 1169/2011: Technical Guidance, allergens need to be clearly emphasized on the product. It does not state how that emphasis needs to be, as long as it is there.

Most businesses seem to do this by putting the allergen in bold in the ingredients list. However, this is not the only way this can be done. To read the full guidance, click here. A more simplified version has been created by the Food Standards Agency. There is also specific guidance for loose foods. Click here to read that guidance.

Costcutter's Independent Sliced Chorizo

So the problem with Costcutter's Independent Sliced Chorizo is that though the ingredient milk is mentioned on the label, it has not been emphasized. Those with an allergy or intolerance to milk, will have gotten used to quickly scanning for milk, without reading every single ingredient on the label. And so they may miss that the allergen they are allergic to, is in the Chorizo, and consume it. This could create health problems for them, and if severe, they could even go into anaphylactic shock, from which they could die.

Thus, Costcutter is having to recall their allergen containing product:

  • Independent Sliced Chorizo Dry Cured and Seasoned with Paprika
  • Pack size: 80g
  • Use by date: All dates up to and including 13/11/2017
