Allergen Recall: Brasserie Gluten Free Organic Pale Ale

Main Body

Aldi is recalling their Brasserie Gluten Free Organic Pale Ale because it contains barley. This is not mentioned on the ingredients list, as as such could pose a health risk to those with an allergen to barley.

Barley is one of the four grains that contain gluten; the others are wheat, rye and oats. So one would think that the barley contained in this gluten free drink also contains gluten. However, on the Food Standards Agency website it states that 'The product does not pose a risk to consumers with coeliac disease.' So we are assuming that the gluten in the barley has become neutralised in some way. However, if you need to stick to a gluten free diet, you may want to double check that with Aldi itself, if you are planning to drink this Ale.

On Aldi's website, nor on their own recall notice is this mentioned. all it states is that the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to barley.

A food allergy is caused by a reaction from the immune system that occurs soon after eating a certain food. And it doesn't have to be a large amount of that food either, just a tiny bit could be enough to trigger an immunological response. Food allergy symptoms can vary from mild to severe, from a rash to anaphylactic shock.

A food intolerance is much less serious, and does not involve the immune system. Though the signs and symptoms can be similar, which can lead to confusion over whether someone has a food intolerance or a food allergy. Food allergies cause an immune system response that affects numerous organs in the body, and can be life threating. A food intolerance can be uncomfortable, but is not life threatening. To read more about the difference between the two, read this article by the Mayo Clinic.

The Ale being recalled by Aldi is their Brasserie Gluten Free Organic Pale Ale, has a bottle size of 750ml; all batch codes are affected.
