It was RoSPAs Family Safety Week last mornth, and they focused on preventing accidents in the home.

Falls are the most common cause of accidents to children in a home, so they’ve given loads of tips on how to keep those little ones safe.

  • Most accidents happen at home

  • Most of those happen in the lounge/living room

  • 6,000 people die every year due to accidents at home

  • Of those, 62 are under 14

  • 2 million under 15s are taken to A&E every year due to accidents in and around the home

  • Those most likely to suffer accidents at home are children under 5 and elderly people over 65 (and especially those over 75)

  • 76,000 under 14s are admitted to hospital due to accidents at home, more than 3,000 of whom are under 5s.

  • The most common injuries are sustained because of falls. The older the person, the higher the risk.

  • Over 4,200 children fall on stairs, and 4,000 under 15s fall from windows

  • In the over 65s, more women than men die due to an accident in the home

  • Though in children, boys have more accidents than girls

  • About 25,000 under 5s are taken to A%E due to accidental poisoning

  • On average, 13 under 4s suffer a severe injury due to burns or scalds

  • Accidents at home are estimated to cost the UK around £45.63 billion every year
