Sainsbury’s Vegetable Spring Rolls

These Spring Rolls are being recalled because they contain prawns, which are not declared on the label. So those who are vegetarian find themselves eating non-vegetarian food. What's worse, those with an allergy to crustaceans might find themselves in a life-threatening situation...

Crustaceans

If someone has an allergy to crustaceans like prawns, the safe food they thought they were eating is now potentially deadly. Because these Spring Rolls contain prawns, and a severe allergy to them can mean death to the consuming allergic person.
In a worst case scenario, they could go into anaphylactic shock (also called anaphylaxis) - and if they are not immediately treated, they could die from this.

So it is very important that these Vegetable Spring Rolls Selection by Sainsbury's is taken out of circulation

Crustacean Allergy

An allergy to crustaceans usually starts in adulthood and is likely to be lifelong. Even a small amount of any allergen can cause the person to go into anaphylactic shock, which is life threatening if not treated immediately with adrenaline. This sometimes also happens without the allergen being consumed - touching it, or inhaling fumes containing it, may cause this allergic reaction.

Crustaceans

Crustaceans belong to the shellfish family. Crustaceans such are shrimp, prawns, lobster, crab and crayfish tend to cause the most allergic reactions within the shellfish family. Those who have an allergy to crustaceans may not have an allergy to other shellfish, such as molluscs (eg, clams, mussels, oysters and scallops). However, crustaceans and molluscs are often stored together, creating a risk of cross contamination.

Both crustaceans and molluscs are recognised as part of the 14 allergens.

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylactic shock, or anaphylaxis, is a life threatening condition. Symptoms may include swelling in the face, throat and/or mouth; difficulty breathing; severe asthma; abdominal pain, nausea and/or vomiting; a drop in blood pressure; collapse, unconsciousness and death if not treated with adrenaline immediately.

The 14 Allergens

There are 14 major allergens that need to be clearly highlighted on the packaging of any food that contains it. If the allergen is sold in a different way, for instance as loose foods or cooked into a meal, information on what contains any of these 14 allergens must be easily available.

The Law

From December 13, 2014, all food businesses have to provide this information on these 14 allergens, wherever they might be present in foods.
