Pasty

Lewis Pies Ltd's Traditional Pasty

Lewis Pies Ltd are recalling their Traditional Pasty, because it contains the allergen milk, which is not declared on the label.

The Allergen Milk

Some people's immune system overreacts to certain proteins in the milk, which results in an allergy to milk, dairy and other milk-derivatives. This allergic response tends to happen very rapidly - although the exact time can depend on what other foods were consumed at the same time and how long their digestion takes. The fact that these pasties contain milk, where someone with an allergy to milk carefully avoids milk in order to not go into anaphylactic shock, could literally cost them their life...

Lactose Intolerance

There are also people who suffer from lactose intolerance, caused by an inability to digest lactose, which is found in milk and other milk products. The symptoms often include abdominal pain, bloating and gas, diarrhea and nausea. These tend to start within an hour or two after the person drinks milk or eats milk products. Again, people who get these reactions carefully avoid milk and lactose containing products, and they would not have bought or consumed this pasty had they known. The effects, as you've seen above, severely affect their daily life.
