Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey non-dairy ice cream is being recalled because it contains Nuts and Soya which are not declared, as an artwork error printed over the detailed nutritional and allergen information.
Soya Allergy
Though soya allergies are not as common as some other allergies, it nevertheless affects a lot of people, who could potentially die from eating a product containing soya. For those with an intolerance to soya, eating products containing soya affects their health and wellbeing.
Pistachios, Nuts and Anaphylaxis
Pistachios are a type of nut, and nuts are one of the 14 allergens that must be clearly highlighted on all the labels.
This ice cream seems suitable for those with an allergy to nuts, because, according to the label, it does not contain any. However, just one little taste of this ice cream - for instance, tasting it with the tip of a tongue - could put a person who is allergic to nuts, in a deadly situation. Their lips can swell, their throat will swell shut, inside their lungs, their bronchii will start swelling as well, and the person won't be able to breathe. This process is called anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock , and if medical attention in the form of an adrenaline auto-injector is not given within minutes, the person can die.
