Frozen Vegetables Recall

Greenyard Frozen UK Ltd, who produces frozen vegetables under a wide variety of brands (incl Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Sainsbury and Waitrose), is recalling these products because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes

Listeria monocytogenes is a hardy bacterium that is widespread in the environment and can contaminate a wide range of foods. Because it is so very hardy, it can not just survive in lower temperatures, but also still grow and multiply. Most bacteria will survive in the fridge, for instance, but are simply dormant at those lower temperatures. Listeria, however, can still multiply at temperatures as low as 0°C.

This is one of the reasons is it most commonly associated with pre-cooked foods, chilled ready-to-eat foods such as cooked sliced meats, smoked fish, cooked shellfish, soft mould-ripened cheeses, pate and pre-prepared sandwiches that do not require further cooking or reheating.

Listeria monocytogenes Outbreak in Europe

Though the Food Standards Agency does not mention it in their recall notification, there has been an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes in Europe for a couple of years already. You can read more about it in this article by the European Food Safety Authority.

We suspect this recall is linked to that outbreak, which may originate from vegetables frozen in a plant in Hungaria. The Hungarian Food Chain Safety Office banned the marketing of all frozen vegetables and mixed vegetable products produced by this particular plant between August 2016 and June 2018, and ordered their immediate withdrawal and recall.
