Allergen Recall: Birds Eye 4 x Shortcrust Chicken Pies

Birds Eye is recalling its 4 x Shortcrust Chicken Pies because some packs contain Steak Pies, containing mustard, instead of Chicken Pies.

Birds Eye is recalling their 4 x Shortcrust Chicken Pies Boxes because due to a mix up on their packaging lines, some boxes do not contain their Shortcrust Chicken Pies but contain their Steak Pies instead.

Allergens

These Steak Pies contain mustard, which is one of the 14 allergens that manufacturers and producers have to clearly label in the ingredients list. The number of people in the UK with a mustard allergy seems to be small, but for those people who do react to this allergen, the reaction can be severe and could cost their life.

So it is very important that those with a mustard allergy, and those serving or buying food for them, should be able to quickly and easily see whether their is mustard (or any other allergen) in the food.

Mustard Allergy

Mustard allergies are not that common in the UK, though more common in other European countries.
However, for those with an allergy to mustard, eating mustard could cause an allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock. Anaphylaxis can kill people within minutes if not treated quickly.

Foods containing Mustard

Mustard is used as seeds, as powder (where the seeds are ground down), as sprouts and, of course, the yellow (ranging to brown) mustard condiment most people will be more familiar with.

Mustard is used in a lot of different foods and used as an ingredient in a lot of other condiments - mayonnaisse and ketchup, barbecue sauce and salad dressings, for instance.

The 14 Allergens

There are 14 major allergens that need to be clearly highlighted on the packaging of any food that contains it. If the allergen is sold in a different way, for instance as loose foods or cooked into a meal, information on what contains any of these 14 allergens must be easily available.

The Law

From December 13, 2014, all food businesses have to provide this information on these 14 allergens, wherever they might be present in foods.
